Obama, the White House and Preservation Guidelines

I try to purposely avoid political discussions but I thought with a new president on the horizon, that some facts regarding the White House. I recieved a politically motivated spam email during the election that said the Obama's would "paint the White house black". To set the record straight, no one "paints" the White House , it is a federally landmarked structure and the exterior and interior of the home are tightly controlled by national parks servoice. The Obama children will certainly be allowed to "decorate' their rooms. The first lady will also be allowed to do some decorating but must follow strict guidelines.

One of the duties Michelle Obama is likely to assume, is chair/spokeperson of the National Trust for Historic Preservation "Preserve America/Save America" Program. This program was started under the Clinton Administration and Hillary Clinton was very active in the program as is Laura Bush the current first lady. This program provides grants to cities for historic presrevation projects.

The 55,000-square-foot mansion includes 35 bathrooms, 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 8 staircases, and 3 elevators.

Landscaping includes a host of gardens, parks and outdoor event areas, including the South Lawn, used for the Easter Egg Roll and the Rose Garden, site of the annual turkey pardoning. Flora includes tulips, hyacinths and chrysanthemums in the East Garden and magnolia trees, Katherine crab apple trees and, of course, a variety of roses in the Rose Garden.

For recreation, there's a tennis court, jogging track, swimming pool, movie theater, and bowling lane.
